Almost-burnt offerings

You'd think I would have learned by now, after that time I turned a casserole into charcoal, to be careful using the oven. But no.

I've decided to give Baby roast vegetables every day, because at least she eats them. This is all fine and good, but it is such a bad idea to put the veges in the oven while Baby's having her morning nap, then sneak off to use the Internet for a few minutes.

Because half an hour later, I'll suddently remember that I haven't checked on the roast veges in an awfully long time.

And then I'll knock furniture over in my haste to get to the smoking kitchen.

Fortunately, the potatos, pumpkin and carrots are okay - only slightly more charred than they ought to be.

Well, Baby's got to get used to my cooking some time, right?

My mother was a woefull cook and when I was nine she got together with a Southern man with a passion for cooking. He imediately ingratiated my older brother and sister but in the realm of food all folks from the Deep South are different from us Northerners. (but it turns out that they're not all bigots!)
Today I still lean more towards my mom's bland Yankee quisine over Jimmy's exotic but well cooked Southern fare.

Baby does need something to compare restaurant meals to so burning stuff is good. I think..
Plus it gives her a low standard to beat when she gets older and starts learning to cook..

Spin it the other way, surely carbon is good for you?

nigel: I thought I had it made when I got together with the boy, because he's a reasonably good cook. Unfortunately he's too busy bringing home the bacon, to actually cook it as well.

beth: that's only 1 hour longer than they're supposed to be there, right? ;-)

ms.mac: she's a fussy one though, esp. when those teeth are moving. Even roasted veges aren't tempting her today.

avery's mom: perhaps I shouldn't, and she'd eat more...

happyandblue2: you're so right. it's so important to bring her up with low standards in cooking.

nyx: I wish it were. It's a carcinogen, you know.

So that's why restaurants have "chargrilled veges" on their menus.
