Learning by writing

I've learned a few things since I started my writing class (the last one is tomorrow, sob...).

One is that a thesaurus is a very, very good thing.

Another is that I can't easily write serious emotional stuff. This shouldn't have surprised me, since I can't talk it either.

But I can do levity.

And I've gained a new appreciation for any writer, no matter how crappy I think his or her books are, who can get published.

FYI, I have almost finished my short story - the one I've been writing for class. The tutor really liked my penultimate draft, and hopefully the changes I made for the final draft actually improve it.

oh well done :) will we get a chance to read it? what will you do to maintain and develop your newfound skills once your class finishes?

It is a good feeling to accomplish things.
Are you thinking of taking any other classes after this one?

avery's mom: Yeah, especially if they are online, so you can look them up while writing and don't have to get off your chair to do it!

cathi: well I was going to enter the Sunday Star Times short story competition, but I've not been organised enough to get it sent in on time. But I'll try and join a writers' group to keep up my motivation.

angela: it's definitely a possibility!

The emotional stuff part makes me think of David Sedaris, who along with his boyfriend, Hugh, cannot express sincere affection for one another without acting it out using sock puppets.

Thinking about it, I think it would be kind of nice for somebody else's sock puppet to tell my sock puppet how much he or she loves him or her.

Do suck puppets really have/need a gender?

nigel: I think "suck puppets" sounds kinda appropriate for some relationships ;-)
