I went to every New Age shop in town, as well as several music shops; not a single white noise CD could I find. There were a couple of sleep aid CDs, but these were aimed at adults and were full of tinny orchestral music and Barry White sound-a-likes.
However, I did find Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium, and at 20% off, too.
For the last week, it's been taking us up to four hours to settle Baby down for the night; tonight, we had the aquarium installed on the side of her cot and it was a matter of going back there every 5-10 minutes to turn on the music and light show.
Okay, so it's been one and a half hours now, and she's still pissed off that we've left her by herself to sleep; but at least she quietens down for a few minutes every time I push the button...

I just got a pop up despite Firefox generally blocking them.
Too bad you can't set the thing to restart itself every few minutes..
They should make a version with a remote control so you can stay out of the room. Having to pop in and out isn't helping her get over your absence any sooner I would imagine. We cheat and turn the volume right down. Baby get sto see the light and the bubbles and fishes and such, but listens to a CD full of Bach that lasts an hour (typically longer than baby lasts). This way the souds are still bombing along after the aquarium packs it in.
Wishing you and your family a Happy New Years..
Happy New Year!
mtnw: ah... now I see the relevance of your Mrs Doyle post! Once I cleared my cookies, I stopped getting the popup; have you tried that ? Otherwise I just have to wait for Blogger to get back to me.
happyandblue2: I agree totally - mind you, the batteries wouldn't last long would they?
rainypete: when I receive my white noise CDs from the States, I'll be doing the same thing as you.
eb: what kind of bar - Mermaids ( a strip joint)?
Gack - this reminded me a comment SuperNanny made about having a light/sound show at bedtime - "They're there to sleep, not disco." Something about it being too stimulating at bedtime.
I hope Baby's sleeping gets easier for you guys; you're a pair of bl**dy troopers... I'm sure I would have resorted to a brick by now.
(And Merry Christmas and all that!)
wicked: for a long time I didn't want any mobiles or anything on her cot for that very reason. But I heard good things about the aquarium. It kinda hypnotises them.
I've been considering sedation (for myself too!) - just jokingly - or at least drinking camomile tea before the last breastfeed of the evening.
Couldn't you just put a mike up to a staticky AM radio station and record? Or even just leave on the radio on said staticky station?
glomgold: I tried that, but we get this high pitched sound coming through which the boy found really annoying - we assume that Baby does too.
