I'm thinking of getting a dress form, to help me with my sewing. I feel like I shouldn't 'cos they aren't cheap 'round this part of the world - around 350 bucks - but I did source one that's about 60 bucks cheaper (this is it here).
It would certainly make clothes-fitting way easier (unless I'm making trousers, because those things don't have crotches or legs), and I'd be able to learn how to design by draping.
But on the other hand, maybe it's still an extravagance. I've made do okay so far, and anyway fitted tops and dresses tend not to be very flattering on me. So maybe I don't need one.
The boy says I should get myself one and call it a Christmas present to myself. But my taste in prezzies doesn't normally run that expensive.

Go for it - it will make your life so much easier. Treat yourself!
For fitting and alterations, a paper tape form is plenty. Supplies cost less than $50 USD. I had one for a year. When I decided I wanted to drape clothes on a form, the "professional" one came in handy.
I have no idea how use it will be for actual sewing, but imagine having one standing in in the corner of your house! Would be rather spiffy! And you could use it as a coat/hat rack too.
Go for it, definitely treat yourself. It is an investment, a sewing aid and a sculpture for the home all in one. I agree with the boy on this one.
Thanks for your thoughts - I think I will just wait and hope for the urge to go away. I just discovered that this particular dress form - very similar to the Singer one - can not be adjusted vertically. So while I always have to shorten every bodice pattern by about 2.5cm to accommodate my shorter torso, I won't be able to do this to the dress form. Which is kinda inconvenient really.
