Footloose and dairy-free

What a thing to be told so close to Christmas! I got a call at work (on my cellphone initially, but I never hear it ringing and after a while people stop trying to contact me on it...) and it was the people at the After Hours clinic.

The labs results on The Little Madam's poo sample had come back and apparently she's been a victim of some bacteria which I couldn't spell - You-sue-ree-ah or something. Then I was transferred to a doctor and I told him that TLM's been more-or-less fine except for the mild temperatures and the worsening diarrhea, and that I thought she might have become temporarily lactose-intolerant.

And that's when the doctor told me to keep TLM off all dairy products for at least the next two weeks. Not just cows' milk and cheese and yoghurt, but anything that has even the smallest smidgeon of dairy in its manufacture. Then, just for good measure, he told me to put her back on the sick-baby diet (i.e. crackers, bread, rice and water), a diet that even prison inmates don't have to put up with.

That means TLM's first food-accessible Christmas is going to be one in which she can't have more than the merest taste of roast turkey, ham or cake. And certainly no ice cream.

It also means that while the rest of the extended family is lying about stuffed with food, a certain somebody will be demanding extra aided-walks around the house.

I hope it ends up ok. I didn't know that there could be temporary lactose intolerance. I better be careful, the twins and 4 and they drink low fat eggnog with me every night ;-)

That seems awful at this time of year. I think you should all go on the sick kid diet through Christmas just to make TLM feel like she's part of the celebration, ha,ha..

Well, I hope she feels better soon. I guess you can look at the good side, you don't have to figure out what to fix for her.

That's good she's better but bad about the food thing. Not sure why she can't have the turkey or ham though - there's no dairy in them is there?

michael c: yeah, it's apparently common following a tummy bug because lactase (the enzyme which processes lactose) is on the outermost surface of the stomach lining and is the first to go when bugs strike.

happyandblue2: I'm sure TLM wouldn't want us to suffer just 'cos she's unwell...

angela: pasta, rice, pasta, rice...

nyx: I'm not supposed to give her rich or high-protein food - just stuff that's easy to digest. Hence the focus on water, bread, pasta and rice.

What a pain. Small children just seem to go from one illness to the next sometimes. Hope you (and she) manage to have some fun and relaxation over the holiday season anyway.

mtnw: TLM's doing fine actually. I reckon it's more to do with going dairy-free than the antibiotics though. So by Christmas I'm going to let her eat whatever she wants (as long as it's food).
