Slacker in the sun

Today has been just fabulous, weather-wise. It was a bit chilly indoors in the morning, but hey - it is mid Winter after all. Eventually I went for a waddle around the block to warm up my feet, and when I returned I took one of my dining chairs out into the back yard to sit in the sun and read.

It’s amazing how pleasurable just sitting around with a book, outdoors in warmth and sunshine, can be - it feels like actual activity. Doing the same thing on a cold, grey day just feels like filling in time. In fact, I must've been out in the back yard for three or four hours and was loathe to leave my sunny position even to make myself snacks (and I've been needing lots of those).

I’ve just finished Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk (who wrote Fight Club). That guy sure has a weird imagination – the anti-hero of this book is the last surviving member of a cult a suicide pact, who ends up becoming a major media celebrity. He works as a super-domestic for a professional couple, "plants" fake flowers stolen from a mausoleum into their garden and his hobby is his own telephone "Help" line. Palahnuik makes me wonder whether he takes hallucinogenic drugs.

Still no sign that Baby wants to leave his womb.

isn't palahniuk weird? i haven't read survivor but i read diary and fight club and finished both scratching my head and wondering where he gets it.

Defintely a weird book (and author). I must read it again. Palaniuk must do so much research before he writes his books in order to come up with all those bizarre facts.

It's amazing that in a few days time you will have your baby! I wish for you a short delivery and much happy bonding afterwards...I hope you find moments to write updates :-)

Palahniuk is a little mental. I think that's why I like his stuff.

Maybe you should have a frank, adult discussion with baby. Give him the facts, perhaps a timetable. He's sure to comply.

I hope you plan on reading baby stories to your baby and not the depressing books you keep talking about. Sheesh..

Fight Club, awesome movie. Bought it on DVD last year, but never got round to watching it again. Might have to do that this weekend. Don't know if I could read a book that weird though. Hell, at the moment I don't have time to read any books :-(

Some of you are reading way too much into my last sentence. I was using 'his' in the generic sense. So there.

I'm definitely going to read Palahniuk's "Lullaby", though perhaps not in the near future (sounds too disturbing for a soon-to-be mother).

I promise to read more appropriate stuff out loud to Baby though, perhaps some Dr Seuss.

Doesn't it strike you as strange, even though exposure to the sun has so many positive effects, that people spend all their time avoiding it? Enclosed concrete buildings, work indoors during daylight hours, I don't get it.

Not at all, glomgold. Here in NZ the sun is as dangerous as it is attractive. The risk of skin cancer caused by too much exposure to UV rays is pretty high in these parts.

Is this pre- or post- ozone layer hole I wonder?

Post-ozone hole, of course - the hole appeared one day years ago and has never gone away. We blame it on Northern Hemispbere pollution, of course.
