Forgetting to be productive

I was thinking today, how handy it would be if there were pockets in more of my clothes. And then I thought it would be really handy to have a little zip-up purse-y thingy to hold tampons, lip balm and all those other things that I might want with me when I use the Ladies', but which don't easily and discretely fit into one hand (and which a pocket would be really useful for).

So in my lunch break I went into one of those beautiful-things shops, and saw some cute little zip-up purse-y things, and made tsk-tsk noises when I saw the prices of those things. I could sew one up myself and it wouldn't cost me anything, I thought. And as I walked home in the icy wind with multiple layers of fleece about me, I pondered whether to make it out of bleached denim or the lime green quilting cotton. In my head, I alternated between choosing a plastic zip, and the metal zip from the boy's discarded jeans (the ones which are halfway to becoming a corporate-bogan shell top), and tried to decide whether my purse-y thing should be cylindrical, cube-like or flat.

Boring as I am, I was actually excited about making my own tampon holder.

And then...I got home and completely forgot about it. Now it's time to go to bed and the most productive thing I've done is put TLM to bed and wash some dishes.

I have always thought too many women's clothing were underpocketed.
I think purses had an atrophy effect on the pockets.
Worst of all are the vestigial faux pockets common on men's suit jackets.

Nigel Patel just said exactly what I was thinking. Women's clothing should have more pockets! Having to carry a bag for wallet and keys etc slows me down in all sorts of small yet annoying ways. One thing that particularly irks me in getting DOTH into her car seat in dangerous busy carparks. Carrying a bag means I always have one extra thing to manage.

The one good thing about my school uniform wearing days was the compulsory blazer with multiple pockets perfect for discreetly carrying a few tampons.

Faux pockets are so lame! My favourite skirt and trousers both have hip pockets. Unfortunately, tops with pockets give me a bulked up look, so I go pocket-less up top. But I suppose that's one big reason for the lack of pockets in women's clothing eh?
I keep meaning to put little pockets in the clothes I sew, but ultimately laziness wins over and I don't bother. So I have to blame myself too...

I can count on one hand the number of dresses I've sewn without pockets! I must have a place to put the lip balm. Even if I don't have time to put the pockets in now, I will make sure I leave the area where the pockets will go with temporary stitching so I can go back and add them later. Or I put in simple patch pockets, which takes very little time.

I really like those pockets in men's coats (inside - the breast pocket?). Can't think why women can't have those. So handy.

Your story reminds me of when I was a child and we used to go to the supermarket and they would have these jellies for sale in plastic containers. And there were say 2-3 colours and we always wanted mum to buy them, but mum would say 'we can make those at home'.

But we never did.

Just buy the purse from the pretty things shop and you will love it.

FYI, I know you're excited about making your own and all, but my two cents is that I bought a cute cloth pencil holder and keep tampons in it - perfect size! :) Perfect for work! It was $2.49 or so, and it's pink cloth with a blue chinese dragon motif. Way cute ...
