Halfway through the dinner (a nice winter-y beefy stew for a slightly wintery evening) that the boy had lovingly cooked, I noticed it.
A weta, curled up in foetal position, was quietly lying in my stew.
The boy, who is greatly disquieted by all bugs but especially wetas, was more distressed than I was.
I told myself it was just as well that it wasn't half a weta that I found in my dinner.
We still haven't figured out how on earth in got there.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! Do those bugs fly? If so that could be how it got in there, or carried in on clothing, etc.
ReplyDeleteAren't wetas huge?
ReplyDeleteLike a small bird.
EOW! At least it's not a flying ant. there are probably loads of them in our food at the moment and we'd be none the wiser.
ReplyDeleteI had to look up a weta -- so, a giant brown ugly cricket? Yuck! I don't know that I would continue eating, even if I made it.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
pbs: It might've been crawling on the ceiling above the stove and just fell in, but really - who knows?
ReplyDeletenigel: Giant wetas are huge. Weta are just big.
donnasoowho: it's probably better if you don't know. The extra protein is probably beneficial.
aprilbapryll: Wasn't the link to the wikipedia link useful? Anyway, so now you have an idea of what I found in my dinner. It definitely stopped both of us from eating the rest of our food!
Yes a whole is better than a half.
ReplyDeleteFood and bugs YUCK!
Hope your christmas was very merry
We used to have a resident weta that lived in a crack near our doorbell. When our visitors rang it the weta would give them a hell of a fright when it popped out to say hello. It got evicted by a huge bush spider a while back and we haven't seen it since. The boy's cooking must be *that* good if your one tried to eat from the pot :-P
ReplyDeleteangela: yeah our Christmas was great, thanks.
ReplyDeletedesiree: well, our weta was more shy but greedier!
i confess - the weta was an xmas gift from suki the cat; she's brought me two as well, altho she didn't manage to deliver mine so thoughtfully into a cooked meal, just left the poor things lying dead on the floor (same place she leaves the cicadas, moths, butterflies & flies). she says she's working on a mouse for dave's birthday.
ReplyDeletehelen: your wetas weren't delivered inside your food because Suki knows you're a vegetarian :-)
